THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A QUALITY AND A CHEAP BABY CRIB

When looking into a new crib for your child, or a brand new crib for your incoming bundle of joy, the first thing you need to be certain of is that it will be sturdy and safe enough to keep your little one safe and sound. This part of our guide aims to help you find the right crib to keep your baby safe, rather than buying a cheaper, lower quality version. Take a look at how to find a high quality baby crib rather than a low quality, cheaper version.

 Convertible

Most baby cribs are convertible to ensure that you are able to use the crib as your child grows. This saves you money overall and keeps your child used to the crib and bed as they grow up. This feature is incredibly useful but does not always come with all baby cribs. Higher quality brands will offer this feature to ensure that the crib lasts, where lower quality cribs will offer support for one stage of development. All of our recommended cribs offer the convertible features to give you the most for your money.

 Design

There are many aspects of the design of the baby crib, there’s the shape, the size and the finish, and each of these is important when looking for a quality baby crib. To find a quality baby crib the design should be one that fits into the theme of your nursery, but also be sturdy enough to keep your child safe. It should also be the right colour of finish, but also non-toxic. There are a number of different designs when it comes to baby cribs, but the high quality option is the one that you feel suits your nursery best.

 Durability

Durability is a key factor of what makes a baby crib higher quality, as children can be boisterous in their cribs and it needs to be able to keep up with them. This means that you need a baby crib with good structural integrity, a finish that won’t peel very easily and a strong wood material that won’t break easily. This will keep your child as safe as possible, as well as allow the crib to last a lot longer, keeping you from having to buy a new one and saving money in the long run.

Customization

High quality cribs allow you to customise many different aspects of them. There are two key customisations that you need to be able to make. The first is the mattress height, which is important as you need to make sure that your child is deep enough into the crib that they won’t be able to get out, but comfortable enough for you to get them into the crib without disturbing them. The second customisation is changing the bed into different kinds of beds as the child grows. This is not a necessity but gives you different options with your child so that you don’t have to buy new beds as they grow.

Finish

The finish is very important, not only as a design aspect of the room, but also to make sure that it is non-toxic and lead free. Almost all governments have standardisations on baby cribs to ensure that they are tested and certified to be free from lead and other toxins. Make sure that any baby crib you look at has these certifications to ensure that your child is safe from these issues and that the finish will not easily peel off and become a choking hazard.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A BABY CRIB

There are a number of factors to consider when buying a new baby crib, as you want to ensure that you get the right crib to assure the safety of your child, whilst also being easy to set up and use, as well as fitting into the design of your nursery. This part of our guide gives you some of the main factors that you need to consider to make sure that you get the right option for you and your little one.

Type of Crib

The type of crib that you are looking for in an important factor, as there are a large number of types of baby crib out there that you can choose from, and each one offers different things. There are three types of crib available for babies, a fixed crib, a portable crib and a convertible crib. This guide focuses on convertible baby cribs for the nursery, but we will also outline fixed cribs and convertible cribs so that you can decide which type of crib suits your needs, and the needs of your little one, the best.

  • Fixed

Fixed cribs are the standard baby cribs that are used within the home. They are available in a range of designs, colours and sizes, meaning that you are certain to be able to find one that fits into the design of your nursery. Fixed baby cribs are not customisable, however, and will not give you the option of more beds for your infant. This is a great option for older children who will not need the crib to be able to change, but will also mean that you will have to buy another bed for your child as they get older and grow out of their crib.

  • Portable

Portable cribs are great for parents who want to have their child with them when they are napping and are ideal for travelling. Portable cribs are very easy to set up and some options will have wheels and brakes so that you can move the crib wherever it is needed. These cribs also tend to be smaller and can be the perfect addition where there is a smaller amount of space, such as an apartment or a hotel room. Portable cribs are not ideal as a permanent bed space, but are a great option for travellers.

  • Convertible

This guide is focused on convertible cribs, which offer the options of different beds to grow with your baby as the get older to save you a lot of time and money. These cribs move from cribs to day beds and then to full sized beds to help smooth the transition from crib to bed with a familiar piece of furniture. These beds will last for years rather than months and are an excellent type of crib for all nurseries. We have five of the best convertible baby cribs in our recommendation section, so make sure to check them out.

Features

Different cribs can offer different features to aid the growth and development of your child. The most common feature is a customisable mattress height so that the mattress fits the needs of the baby, but other features include a teething rail and storage space. These features are a great way of helping your baby to grow and develop, as well as save space in the nursery. Have a look at the extra features that each crib offers to find one that offers you the most convenience and offers your child the best support in their baby crib.

Space Available

The crib that you buy needs to fit into the space you have available, and this can be a little tricky when you are buying a baby crib online. Before making a purchase of any baby crib, you need to be certain that it will fit into the space available. Measure the space that you have available and be aware of any hazards within the space, such as electrical outlets, curtains, etc. to make sure that your baby will be safe. Once you have the dimensions in mind you can begin shopping for the ideal baby crib for your little one.

Safety

Safety is the primary factor when purchasing a baby crib, as there are several areas where your baby crib needs to meet certain specifications. Firstly, the crib needs to meet Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association standards, ensuring it in non-toxic and structurally sound. Any locks must be secure and the mattress should fit the base of the crib properly to minimise any risk. Many parent purchase crib bumpers for newborns, but these are better suited for older babies due to the risk of suffocation. Similarly, pillows and blankets should not be used until the child is able to move around more and the risk of suffocation is lower.

CHOOSING THE BEST BABY CRIB FOR YOUR NEEDS

Finding the right baby crib to fill your needs, and the needs of your little one, can be a little tricky sometimes, especially if you may be unsure of what your needs actually are. There are a number of ways that you can fill your needs and find the right crib and this part of our buying guide helps you to define your needs, as well as give you a few tips on how to fill them so that you can find the right baby crib for you and your baby.

Age of the Child

The age of the child is important as it will change what you need from the crib. Newborns will need a crib that offers changeable mattress heights so that you can get the baby into the crib comfortably but still offer the safety they need to stay in the crib without risk of falling. As the child grows you will need to be able to move the mattress down to keep the child safe. You can also buy convertible cribs that will change as the baby grows so that they have the bed that they need, such as a day bed or a full sized bed when they get to primary school age.

Height

Your height is an important consideration, as this will affect how able you are to put the baby in the crib without disturbing them. Many cribs have a feature that allows you to put down one side to place the baby in the crib then lock it back so as to minimise disturbance and allow you to keep your baby safe. The height also means the height of the mattress; as your baby grows and develops the ability to move and sit, the mattress will need to be lowered to make sure that they are safe.

Price Range

Price range is always an important consideration, as baby cribs can range between hundreds and thousands of dollars, so setting a budget is really important. Have a look at the features and specifications that you feel you want and the prices of the cribs that offer these to gage the price range you will need to consider. With baby furniture it is always better to spend on the higher range of your budget to give your baby the safety that they need, as the safety of your little one is the most important thing.

Assembly

Most baby cribs will require some kind of assembly unless you hire a professional to put it together for you, but this will be an additional cost to that of the crib. There is a certain amount of assembly required but some will be easier than others. If you are not very handy then you may want to go for an option that is easy to assemble, or hire help to assemble the crib for you, but these are all considerations that you need to make to ensure that you get a crib that you will be able to get together and ready to go.

Additional Features

There are a number of features available with different cribs, for example a teething rail and storage compartments. If you have a smaller nursery then extra storage in drawers can be incredibly helpful to make sure you get everything into the room. A teething rail can help ease your child through the trials and tribulations of teething by protecting them from a mouthful of wood and paint, and a convertible crib means that you can save time and money in the long run. Take a look at what features are out there and what you feel will help you and your baby.

Design

Although a very cosmetic issue, the design of the crib is important. When shopping online, or even in stores, the design and set up of the crib can be deceivingly beautiful, but distinctly different to when you set up the crib in your own home. Make sure to look at the design of the crib by itself, without padding and blankets, which will be available with most online sites, to get a better idea of what the crib will look like when you get it home. Once you have it built, you can begin designing the comfort and design later.

 TIPS, TRICKS AND ADVICE

Tips

All of our guides are developed and written with the main goal of making major purchases easier and less stressful. Buying a baby crib is definitely one of those times when a lot of research as stress can go into the project. Not only do we aim to make the process of buying a lot easier, we also try to make life easier after the purchase by giving you a few tips and tricks that will help you along the way. Take a look and take on board the tips that you feel will help you and your baby the most.

Buy Early

Buying your crib early gives you plenty of time to get everything ready to go for whenever the baby arrives. This gives you plenty of time to figure out the assembly of the crib, decorate the room, and air out the fumes so that your new baby has a safe and comfortable nursery when they arrive. Buying early also gives you plenty of time to think through the design of your nursery and get the perfect crib for the design and space of the room. So take your time and have a look at all of the different options out there, as well as our recommendations, to get the perfect crib.

Teething rail

Teething rails have been mentioned a number of times in this guide, and for good reason. Teething rails are essentially a rubber cover on the railing of the crib, which sits at around mouth height. These teething rails protect the infant from chewing on the rail, which runs the risk off splinters and paint chips which can cause injury and illness if eaten by your child. This is much better for your child and can help to soothe them through the pains of teething, which is a difficult time for any child.

Let it Breathe

After you purchase a brand new crib there is most likely going to be some kind of fumes coming from the paint or finish, and there will definitely be fumes if you have painted the crib yourself. Before using the crib make sure that you allow it to ‘breathe’, meaning air out the fumes from the crib and the room before the baby arrives or needs the crib by leaving it a few days with the windows open when you are home. This will stop the baby being at any risk from the fumes of the paint and keep them safe in their nursery and when they are sleeping.

Bedding

Babies shouldn’t be wrapped up in blankets and around pillows, as there is a risk of suffocation that comes with these comfort products. Babies should not get too hot or cold, however, so finding the right way to keep your baby warm enough is important. The ideal temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius (65 degrees Fahrenheit), so the best way to keep the right temperature is with light blankets or a light swaddle blanket. This will keep them warm without putting them at any risk.

Pre-Warming

Pre-warming the blankets can help to settle your baby when you put them down, as when they lay down they can be disturbed by the movement and the cold. Warming the blankets in the tumble dryer or with a heating pad can help to give your baby a comfier bed to settle down in bed after being settled in mom or dad’s arms. This makes crib training your baby much easier in the long run, making family life just a little bit easier.

Waterproof Layers

Babies have a terrible habit of soiling the bed, and this can make a big mess and be difficult to clean if it seeps into the mattress, especially in the middle of the night. Adding a waterproof sheet under the mattress means that you can simply strip the bed, wipe down the waterproof layer and make a clean bed without having to clean or flip the mattress. These sheets are not very expensive and can come in very handy when needed, so make sure to take a look at them whenever you look into buying bedding and comforters for the crib.
